An Idea is Born
One night, during a Twitter chat about the big and little #edutwitter voices, #TinyVoiceTuesday was conceived. It was born out of a frustration that I and many tiny voices felt, that when we asked an educational question on Twitter the tumbleweed would follow – complete silence. Twitter felt like an incredibly lonely place where people with lots of followers were heard and those with only a few were not.
I wanted to give the tiny voices on Twitter, those teachers with a smaller following (myself included) a voice. When I started #TinyVoiceTuesday I had 500 followers (which in Twitter numbers is very few) and I remain incredibly grateful to the bigger voices who retweeted and supported the ‘tinies’ in the first few weeks!
What is #TinyVoiceTuesday?
#TinyVoiceTuesday is a place for shyer/ quieter/ less well-known edutweeters to ask questions, tweet thoughts & be heard. It is important that everyone feels that others are listening, so I ask every week that people like each other’s posts and tweet back. I will speak for those edutweeters who don’t feel able to ask questions themselves – they just have to DM me. Thank you to the everyone responds to the questions asked and retweets the questions. This helps so much!
If you want to ask a question and have it retweeted on #TinyVoiceTuesday, then please tag me in @toriaclaire and add the hashtag #TinyVoiceTuesday (make sure you type it correctly). I search the hashtag regularly throughout the day, but if you tag me in it pops up on my notifications instantly and therefore makes it much easier for me to see. #TinyVoiceTuesday runs for the whole day and I attempt to retweet all tweets with the hashtag.
What is #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites?
On week one of #TinyVoiceTuesday, the suggestion was made that the ‘tinies’ needed to have a time to get to know one another. A time when they could build their Twitter community. From this, #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites was conceived. This takes place all day. I love #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites because the tinies make a point of greeting each other and welcome newcomers so warmly.
If you want to build your community watch for my 6am #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites (not #TinyVoiceTuesday) and comment in the thread with your name and anything else you want to say. The tinies are amazing at following back! Read more about it – click on the link – #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites
It is important that everyone feels supported and heard on Twitter and both #TinyVoiceTuesday & #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites aim to do just that for the tinier/ shyer edutwitter users. Please share this with those people in your educational setting who shy away from Twitter because they’ve tried it before and they haven’t been heard.
Even better – print out the picture below for your staffroom & explain in a staff meeting what #TinyVoiceTuesday & #TinyVoiceTuesdayUnites are. Follow me for updates and I will follow you back too – @toriaclaire.
No voice is too small and every voice deserves to be heard!
